Tesla Motors Steers Toward Self-Driving Cars

Aside from unveiling 'the D,' Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk reportedly plans on revealing new high-tech features including a self-driving mechanism which can help drivers keep the car in the right lane.
Last week, Musk Tweeted a cryptic message about revealing "the D and something else," captioning a photo of a vehicle akin to their Model S in a garage with a huge letter 'D' on its door.

According to The Verge, 'the D' is likely Tesla's all-wheel drive model of their Model S vehicle whereas the 'something else' is thought to be referred to an autopilot mechanism which might allow a Tesla car to drive itself by up to 90 percent.
"A Tesla car next year will probably be 90 percent capable of autopilot. Like, so 90 percent of your miles can be on auto. For sure highway travel," Elon Musk teasingly revealed in an interview with CNN Money.
Such mechanism is known to require the use of various additional functions such as image-recognition cameras and long-distance ultrasonic sensors.
In a report from USA Today, Musk purportedly favors systems akin to those of autopilot jetliners that may allow the plane to go on a cruising mode instead of one that controls all driving functions all the time similar to the one Google is currently experimenting on.
In the past, Musk had already dropped a hint that the automotive company, which mostly caters to luxury car lovers who expect highly advanced and futuristic features in their vehicles, is working on new technologies to improve car travel and that they are steering towards adopting technologies that may lead to a driverless car.
He, however, clarified that this may take some 5 to 6 years before they can be ready to produce such hi-tech vehicles for mass consumption due to some difficulties that they are experiencing in acquiring a computer vision technology that is "faster and more capable at recognizing objects and making decisions."
