Facebook is reportedly creating "support communities" online that would help Facebook users with their various illnesses. Another team is in-charge of creating "preventive care" applications that suit users' lifestyles.
Sources have confirmed that Facebook has been in talks with medical industry experts as well as entrepreneurs regarding building new research and development units as well as testing created health apps.
Facebook's healthcare support is said to be still in its "brainstorming stage" but has come to a conclusion that the healthcare field would be a really great way to produce more revenue for the platform.
Back in 2012, Facebook introduced the "organ-donor status initiative" where people can register to be organ donors. The project has now had over 13,000 people who signed up.
Another is people asking for advice in Facebook once they find themselves having a chronic ailment. People share symptoms, advice and even treatment online.
However, despite the successes of the health-related projects of Facebook, privacy is still a problem. People have often asked sought Facebook's forgiveness as they manipulate the news feed of a sample population for research purposes.
Another is the "real names" policy that has caused a stir towards the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual (LGBT) community. People who are suffering from diseases might want to use another name, experts pointed out.
Frank Williams, the chief executive of Evolent Health, commented on the steps being taken by Facebook. He said that Facebook will do great regarding lifestyle and wellness, but the healthcare field might be too much of a risk since people with diseases and ailments really want to stay anonymous, which could clash with the sites' policies.
Facebook is yet to comment on this issue.
