'Twin Peaks,' the groundbreaking David Lynch TV thriller cult classic from 1990-91, is returning from the dead.

Lynch led Monday off with a tweet confirming what had been rumored for years: "Twin Peaks" is happening again, adding #damngoodcoffee.

Showtime issued a statement saying the new series would consist of a limited run of nine episodes. It will re-unite Lynch with co-producer Mark Frost. The pair will write the episodes while Lynch directs them.

Always highly regarded by critics and fans, "Twin Peaks" became a national sensation when it debuted on ABC in 1990. However, the show lost viewers as it became stranger, a development that otherwise excited fans but drove away mainstream viewers. It was cancelled in 1991 re-appearing as a movie in 1992 titled "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me."

Lynch took his experiences from such classic movies as "Eraserhead" and "Blue Velvet" into the "Twin Peaks" project along with pal Frost, a former "Hill Street Blues" writer. They concocted a bizarre murder mystery centered around FBI agent Dale Cooper's search for the killer of heart school heartthrob Laura Palmer. Kyle McLaughlin played Agent Cooper.

The look inside the soul of Twin Peaks, WA., and the events surrounding the murder, featured a variety of campy, wacky, scary and even shocking moments with characters like the one-armed man, dancing dwarf, log lady, evil BOB and many subterranean artsy scenarios.

The original show remains one of the most discussed and important in TV history. Showtime said it would air the entire run of episodes before debuting the new episodes. Showtime President David Nevins said he wanted to quote Agent Cooper in saying he had no idea where it would lead, but definitely felt it would be to a strange and wonderful place.
