MH370 Search Teams Face Massive Search Area

The search for the missing Malaysia airlines flight 370 reached its tenth day today with no trace of the plane and no vital information as to its whereabouts.

Nothing substantial came out of Monday's Malaysia press conference except to say that the search area has expanded massively, now covering 11 countries.

Malaysia said the search in the northern and southern corridors has begun.  Around 26 countries are involved in the search.

Misshammudin Hussein, Malaysia's acting transport minister, said the Malaysian Prime Minister has conferred with the Premier of China and the Prime Minister of Australia and has sent diplomatic notes to all countries involved in the search and rescue operation.

Hussein said they have sought the help of more countries in finding the missing jetliner, assigning specific search areas to countries covering two corridors.

On the north is the stretch of the east of Sumatra to Kazakstan and to the South is a large portion of the Indian Ocean.

"Countries including Malaysia, Australia, China, Indonesia and Kazakhstan have already initiated search and rescue operations," he said.

Malaysian military officials have deployed air and sea assets to the southern corridor such as ships and planes while two Malaysian ships have deployed the offshore patrol vessels (OPV) KD Kelantan and KD Selangor. A super Lynx helicopter was likewise sent to the search area.

Malaysian officials said Australia has also lent its air and naval assets, with its P-3 Orion aircraft moving to the regions of Cocos and Christmas Islands. In addition to this, Australia's Prime Minister confirmed that they will be sending additional two P-3 Orions and C-130 planes.

"For countries in the search corridors, we are requesting radar and satellite information, as well as specific assets for the search and rescue operation. We are asking them to share their land, sea and aerial search and rescue action plans with the Rescue Coordination Centre here in Malaysia so that we can coordinate the search effort. We have asked for regular updates, including daily reports on both search activities, and details of any information required from Malaysia," he explained.

Meanwhile, China has called on Malaysia to step up its search efforts as Beijing is being pressured by the passengers' families to find the missing plane.

China aviation officials have joined the investigating team even as Malaysia continues to confer with its international counterparts.

The French have also stepped in to help find the missing plane.

Malaysia officials said they have been looking into the backgrounds of the passengers and crew members since day one.

Investigating teams have gone to the pilot's and co-pilot's homes hoping to get some breakthrough in their investigation. Police took away the pilot's flight simulator but found nothing.

Malaysia denied that it is withholding information as China had accused them of doing.

"We are not at liberty to reveal information from specific countries. As the coordinating authority, we are gathering all information as part of the on-going search and rescue operations. We will divulge them as soon as they are verified," Hussein said.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished with 239 people on board, most of them Chinese, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 8.
