The United States International Trade Commission voted Monday to investigate patent complaints against chip manufacturer Qualcomm and Samsung.
The organization will determine whether particular devices from Samsung, such as the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge, should be banned from being sold in the U.S., as the chips the devices are running on allegedly infringe the graphics patents owned by Nvidia.

"We are pleased with the ITC decision today to open an investigation and look forward to presenting our case on how Nvidia GPU patents are being used without a license," Nvidia executive vice president and chief administrative officer David Shannon said in a statement.
Nvidia, which has made a name for itself for manufacturing graphics chips for computers, has filed multiple lawsuits in the previous month, including seven of the company's patents with the US District Court in Delaware, as well as the ITC.
At the same time, the tech company requested the district court to award compensation for the supposed infringement, and asked the ITC to impede the shipments of a number of smartphones and tablets into the U.S.
The issue at hand is whether the chips made by Qualcomm and Samsung infringe the patents of Nvidia related to graphics. Qualcomm's processors have been habitually used by Samsung in its high-end devices.
For example, the Note 4 is equipped a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chip. Samsung also puts its own-developed Exynos chips in other models, specifically the devices sold in South Korea.
The referred gadgets in the lawsuit include ARM Holdings' Mali technology, PowerVR graphics architecture and Qualcomm's Adreno graphics, which are three of the main competitors Nvidia has in mobile graphics.
The affected products in the suit include many prominent Samsung devices, such as the aforementioned Galaxy devices, as well as the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Tab S, Galaxy Tab 2 and the Galaxy Note Pro.
