Latest Buzz on the Medical Field: Lab-Grown Human Penis

Researcher

A researcher examines the penis "scaffold" that will be injected with animal cells.

Calling the attention of men (and interested women) regarding this article as it has been just reported that a government-funded lab in North Carolina has grown tissues for the male private part.

This is not the first time that the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem was able to grow human tissue. For several years since 1999, the lab has already been able to create tissue for 30 human organs such as kidneys, bladders, urethras, hearts - and even vaginas.

The Institute has successfully grown penis tissue over the weekend, although it was of the rabbit kind. The researchers are still awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Association (FDA) so they could test the procedure on human tissue. The lab is said to be funded by the United States Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

The main purpose of creating tissues for different organs is to offer hope to patients suffering from injuries or congenital abnormalities, says Professor Anthony Tala, Institute Director.

Also, the researchers noted that their discovery might also be useful for transgender surgery in the future, and probably could even replace penises of men who had birth defects, and soldiers who suffered from genital injuries. The list goes on and the possibilities are endless!

As for the method, the researchers had to construct a collagen framework from a donor penis. The framework is then washed with a special solution so as to remove the DNA of the donor.

After the DNA is removed, the framework will be injected with the cells from the penis of the patient. This is needed since previous attempts at replacing the organ with donated organs have resulted to the patient's body rejecting the organ. Thus, there should be cells present with the patient's DNA for it to be successful.
