Hong Kong clinched its biggest cricket win by far when it upset heavyweight Bangladesh in the opening stage of the World T20 tournament in Chittagong city, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is among the top ten teams of international cricket.

Hong Kong, on the other hand, has never participated in any major cricket tournament, much less brought down any of the strong contenders.

Thursday's win by Hong Kong, the biggest in its history, was viewed as a major upset against a mighty opponent, but not enough to send it to the Super 10s, the next phase of the tournament.

Earlier in the phase, Hong Kong had lost to Afghanistan and to fellow minnow, Nepal.

The World T20 was expanded this year to take in the minnows, nations that are less established in cricket.

Final standings for Group A on opening week had Afghanistan placing third, trailing Bangladesh and the Nepalese team.

This year's World Twenty20, being held in three Bangladeshi cities from March 16 to April 6, is the fifth for the international cricket tournament.

It is the first time the tournament has 16 teams competing, including six nations that made it to the Bangladesh world event through the 2013 WT20 qualifying event.
