China improves happiness state

China has something to be happy about these days.
It ranked 93rd on the happiness scale among 156 countries in a 2013 United Nations survey, a vast improvement from its 112th rank in 2012.
As it marked the second International Day of Happiness last March 20, Tsinghua University has released a happiness index finding correlations between China's sense of well-being vis-a-vis economic status and development and other factors that affect the people's sense of contentment and happiness.

"Industrialization and urbanization have brought great conveniences to our society but many social problems, especially psychological ones, are still quite high," professor Peng Kaiping of the Tsinghua University said.
Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that around 200,000 people die from psychological problems and illnesses yearly in China.
The same statistics also revealed that more than a million people worldwide die from suicide each year and the number continues to rise.
The high number of suicides across the globe has prompted the United Nations to mark March 20 as International Day of Happiness to promote well-being and lift the spirits of the people.
Back in June 2012, the UN officially adopted Resolution 66/281 otherwise known as International Day of Happiness and Well Being
The United Nations stated that the pursuit of happiness is a "fundamental human goal." It emphasized that the resolution recognizes "the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication happiness and the well-being of all peoples."
"Happiness may have different meanings for different people," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement Thursday, "but we can all agree that it means working to end conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions in which so many of our fellow human beings live."
