"The United Nations, in particular the Security Council as the core of the collective security mechanism, is duty-bound to maintain the international peace and security," China Daily cited Liu as saying.
The permanent Chinese UN envoy also commented expressed support for Iraq's move to protect its sovereignty, freedom and territory. He called on the international community to send more humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people.
With regard to the crisis in Syria, Liu said all the involved parties must strive together to reach a ceasefire deal at the soonest possible time. They must begin the negotiations once again to arrive at a solution that suits all the parties, Liu added.
Liu then talked about the importance of the UN's development and climate change agenda for 2015 and beyond. He called on the international community to continually work together and look into the "mutual interests" of different countries to succeed in their common goals, the report stated.
The Chinese representative then praised the result of last month's UN Climate Change Summit. The event brought the international community together in a united effort to address climate change, according to Liu.
Liu conveyed China's hope that the international community will achieve its 2015 climate change agenda in a way that recognizes "common but differentiated responsibilities" of the countries participating in the effort.
