Chinese Entrepreneurs Remain Confident on Economy

A survey result released by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the country's central bank, showed that confidence among Chinese businessmen grew slightly in the first three months of this year compared to the previous quarter.

The Entrepreneur Confidence Index of the PBOC edged up 1.1 percent to 67 percent from the previous quarter's 65.9 percent. The said index measures the confidence of Chinese entrepreneurs on the domestic economy.

With the latest PBOC Index, experts conclude that Chinese traders continue to be optimistic on the economy despite reports about a slowdown, rising labor cost, and strong local currency. The government has set a gross domestic product growth target of 7.5 percent this year, to which some experts said might be too hard to achieve.

The 67 percent registered in the first quarter of this year, however, is one percent lower compared to the same period of last year. The index surveyed 5,000 Chinese entrepreneurs.

Some 63 percent of the respondents believe the macro-economy was doing normal while 35.2 percent said the economy was cold since January of this year. About 2.1 percent thought the economy was relatively hot during the period from January to March.

It was not just the Chinese entrepreneurs that remained optimistic on the local economy. According to another survey, satisfaction among Chinese urbanites on the price of goods and services went up 3.1 percent to 23.6 percent in the first three months of this year.

Another survey on home prices, still conducted by the PBOC, showed that 65 percent of respondents believed house prices in China in the first quarter were too high while another 48 percent of respondents predict home prices to become stable in the next three months of this year.
