Tired of using your real name on Facebook? This app might just be for you.

The social network is purportedly wrapping up its new mobile stand-alone app that will give users the privilege to interact with one another anonymously, according to a recent report in New York Times.

The app, which will be unmasked in the next few weeks, will let users sign up multiple pseudonyms to openly engage with topics which they may not be comfortable talking about with their real names linked.

The people who were briefed on Facebook's plan said that the new project is currently led by Josh Miller who landed on the company after the acquisition of Branch, a startup focused on building online discussion groups. The sources added that Miller and his team have already started testing the app in its different forms since last year.

The report comes hard on the heels of a latest controversy surrounding Facebook's "real name policy" that requires members to use their legal names when signing up.

A virtual upheaval had spurred among LGBT community after Facebook locked out drag queens and other transgender people from their accounts for identifying themselves with stage names. The angry members of the community claimed that the policy has violated their lifestyles and has left them prone to harassment.

Facebook apologized for its backlash in handling the policy but didn't provide details about what would change.

Now, the company seems to dial back its stance on issues involving real names.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped a hint in January about the company's attempts in launching products for anonymity.

"I definitely think we're at the point where we don't need to keep on only doing real identity things. If you're always under the pressure of real identity, I think that is somewhat a burden," Zuckerberg confirmed.
