New Data Reveals Antarctic Sea Ice Hits All Time Record High

Antarctic sea ice is now seen at record high levels, as scientists and experts continue to challenge the notion that climate change is inevitable. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in the U.S., Antarctic Sea ice is now measured at 7.78 million square miles as of September 20.

This uncanny buildup of sea ice is not to be confused with frozen ice covering tundra and lands, but particularly are seen covering large swaths of sea in the Antarctic ocean.

There are a lots of theories that might consitute this unusual accumulation of sea ice in Antarctica, among them the changing wind patterns blowing from the Southern ocean that leads to faster formation of ice. Another theory involves melted water from glaciers that is seeping down to the ocean where it distrubs salt content and in effect facilitates faster formation of sea ice.

According to Claire Parkinson, senior scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, scientists have not pinpointed a definite explanation that causes this phenomenon.

In an ironic turn of events, the Arctic sea ice continues to melt rapidly at an unprecedented rate every season. The lowest amount of ice was recorded in 2012. This 2014, it was the sixth lowest ever.

Parkinson also adds that the planet is responding to climate change when it comes to temperatures warming.

Apparently, the polar regions are the most hard hit by climate change. Factors involving this phenomena include snowfall rates, salinity, cloud covering, the always transforming ozone hole among many other unforeseeable events in the future.
