"I woke up this morning and it was much, much worse," she said. "It's hard for me to keep playing and keep making it worse."

Bouchard's opponent, Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova will move on to the quarterfinals and face Karin Knapp of Italy.

The recently promoted World No. 6 Bouchard had a stellar performance this year, reaching the semifinals of both the Australian and French Open but made a major breakthrough when she took on Petra Kvitova in the finals of the Wimbledon Championships.

Bouchard's first and only WTA title came in May of this year in Germany where she defeated Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova in three sets.

Pliskova, 22, is the only seeded player left in the tournament and will be playing in the quarterfinals against Mona Barthel of Germany on Saturday.

Bouchard is the second player to withdraw from the tournament, Ana Ivanovic also withdrew her second round matchup against American qualifier Madison Brengle because of hip injury.

Both Bouchard and Ivanovic are competing in the season-ending WTA Tour Finals in Singapore slated to start on Oct. 20.

"The plan is to take a lot of days off right now and really rest," Bouchard said. "The goal is to try and play Singapore in a week and a half. I won't have ideal training probably but I'll give it my best."

In the eight-woman short list to Singapore, three players are in the injured list. Besides Bouchard and Ivanovic, World No. 1 Serena Williams also suffered a knee injury.

Williams, 33, withdrew her quarterfinals matchup against Australian Samantha Stosur at the China Open in Beijing last week.

With three players injured, especially Williams, it seems that World No. 2 Maria Sharapova has a great chance of winning the prestigious season-ender and if she does, Sharapova might end Williams' more than four year reign of the No. 1 ranking.
