Zeng will take on Sorana Cristea of Romania next who defeated Andrea Hlavackova 6-3 6-0 in their second round matchup.
U.S. Open semifinalist Shuai had a much easier time in her second round matchup against Russian qualifier Elizaveta Kulichova than her opening match against qualifier Shahar Pe'er of Israel as she defeated the Russian in straight sets 6-1 6-2 compared to the three set win against Pe'er.
Shuai, 28, will now face eighth seeded Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia who won over China's Yingying Duan in two sets 6-4 6-4.
Shuai's former doubles partner, Su-wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei has also advanced to the quarterfinals after coming back from a set down against Zhung Shuai of China, no relation to Peng, and taking the last two sets to win it at 3-6 6-3 7(7)-6(5).
Hsieh will have a much more difficult time in her quarters matchup against 17-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland who advanced to the quarterfinals after fellow Swiss Romina Oprandi withdrew from the tournament.
Bencic shocked everyone as she defeated top 10 seeds Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic en route to her very first quarterfinals appearance at any Grand Slam tournament in the recent U.S. Open.
She became the youngest player U.S. Open quarterfinalist since her fellow Swiss Martina Hingis who is also playing in Tianjin in the doubles tournament along with partner Flavia Pennetta.
In other matches, fourth seeded Varvara Lepchenko defeated wild card entry Fangzhou Liu in two exciting sets 7(7)-6(3) 7-5.
The 28-year-old Lepchenko now sets up an all-American encounter against sixth seeded Alison Riske who defeated Olga Govortsova in straight sets 6-4 7(7)-6(3).
