Nidal Hasan was convicted of 31 counts of attempted murder and 13 counts for premeditated murder. However, there was no terrorism charges filed against him. Hasan has been set to face the death penalty in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Hasan told his lawyer John Galligan to send the undated letter to Pope Francis. The six-page letter was titled "A Warning To Pope Francis, Members Of The Vatican, And Other Religious Leaders Around the World." Fox News said they were also provided with a copy of the letter by Hasan’s lawyer.
In his correspondence, Hasan referred to the Koran several times and made a guideline for believers. In one section, Hasan wrote his willingness to fight for Allah and that his act was aimed to inspire other believers. Furthermore he wrote that jihad brings the mujahedeen closer to Allah compared to those who believe yet do not fight.
Meanwhile, Hasan’s letter made no reference to what had happened in Fort Hood.
Fox News was able to get a copy of another letter Hasan wrote which states his commitment to the Islamic State and its leader. Hasan’s lawyer said the letter showed how much his client life was driven with his passion for the Islamic religion. His lawyer also said he thinks the military judge who convicted Hasan has made an error by not allowing his client to testify and argue how his religious beliefs drive him to commit the shooting act.
The lawyer representing the Fort Hood families, Neal Sher, also said Hasan is deeply committed to jihad. Sher said there are already 150 people involved in a lawsuit filed against the Justice Department and the Defense Department. The lawyer also added Hasan has always made it clear that he believes in jihad and tried to justify the Fort Hood massacre. Furthermore, Sher said Hasan’s jihad beliefs had been known even before he committed the 2009 shooting.
Sher said Hasan tried to justify his acts by defending his al Qaeda and ISIS brothers. It showed that the convict was proud of his actions rather than shy away from it. The lawyer also said the US administration does not want to acknowledge that an act of terrorism was committed in America.
