Baidu to Launch Operating System for Smart Bikes

China's technology sector is eager to expand, with the recent Alibaba IPO in the United States and Tencent Holdings incredible foresight on League of Legends, more companies are looking for ways to branch out from their first idea, to create a variable business.

Baidu, China's most popular search engine, has been interested in smart home tech, as a way to branch out from search. The company has already built a blood pressure gadget, Baidu Eye, the Chinese competitor to Google Glass and smart chopsticks that can alert users to toxic cooking oil.

The next smart gadget will be a bike, dubbed the DuBike. A Baidu representative told TechInAsia:

"This smart bike OS we are developing is going to be opened up to bike makers in the future. The DuBike system includes sensors on the bike as well as apps in the cloud. The [rumors in Chinese media] described most of the major functions of the smart bike, which can design a riding route or work-out plan for bikers who bike for health according to factors like his body conditions and heart rate. It can also help bikers build a community and crowdsource a riding map. The prototype has started road test."

Using the cloud, Baidu will be able to pull results from the bike into a data program, offering health analysis and other health and fitness stats. This could be useful for people trying to lose weight, but it will also be useful for people setting routes and planning trips.

Baidu is showing promise when it comes to innovative ideas, even if some of these don't sell exceptionally well. Xiaomi, another Chinese tech company, is also looking into smart home tech in the near future.
