7 Chinese Vessels Coordinate Search in Perth

China continues its search operation for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 with seven Chinese vessels on Sunday convening in the waters of Perth, Australia to conduct a more coordinated search.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the seven ships that convened in waters west of Perth include Kunlushan, a transport dock; Qiandaohu, a supply ship; missile destroyer Haikou; and Haixun 01, Nanhaijiu and Donghaijiu.

The vessels will be assigned to search the northern and southern patch of the vast search area. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said a total of 10 planes and eight vessels participated in Sunday's search.

The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane continues because despite reports of debris being cited by satellite images, no actual debris has been recovered since the plane went missing on 8 March.

Sunday's search continues to focus on an area pinpointed by international air crash investigators. The area covers 320,000 square kilometers of water east of Perth.

A Chinese Air Force plane, the Ilyushin IL-76, was first to depart for the search area on Sunday morning.  It was the Ilyushin that first spotted three suspicious objects yesterday.

The search activities conducted the previous day ended with reported sightings of suspected debris but still no confirmations were made, Australian authorities said.

The vessels and airplanes allowed by Australian authorities to participate in the mission are tasked to locate and identify the supposed objects sighted by satellite images over the past days.

The Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared 8 March on its way to Beijing carried 227 passengers, with two-thirds of which were Chinese. The Chinese government has requested Malaysia to be more transparent with its investigation in light of mounting protests as families decry the delay of the search operation.
