Sarah Cheiker, a woman from Los Angeles, California who mysteriously disappeared in 2008, was found alive in a filthy shack in 2012 revealing that three people befriended her, but later disappeared with all her money.

Cheiker, 89, was found 3,200 miles away from her home at a cabin in Edgecomb, Maine when officers were tipped about her possible location. She was then found in an abandoned hut located at an establishment called Pine Crest Motor Court, which was reportedly surrounded by rotting food.

Officials noted that the elderly woman might have survived from eating fast food and oranges despite living under temperature of 100 degrees or more. Cheiker was immediately brought to the Miles Memorial Hospital where she had fully recovered, the officials added.

Cheiker had no known next of kin and had been living in California for 35 years before she disappeared. Police officials reported that she was abandoned by "young friends" who were identified as Nicholas and Barbara Davis, both 41 years old. Barbara and Nicholas are said to be twins and had a godson named Jonathan Stevens, 21, when they stole Cheiker's money and used it for traveling the country.

According to the former neighbors of Cheiker, the trio first helped Cheiker by taking her to doctor's appointments and the store. The three even let her move into their home when fire damaged parts of her house.

Authorities then investigated how Cheiker moved from California to Maine, and they stated that the three took her on a financially draining trip across the nation before finally leaving her at the said shack. The investigators noted that the trio thought Cheiker would die shortly after they left her causing them to believe they will not get caught by authorities.

The house where Cheiker lived in California has been demolished and according to public property records, a living trust under Cheiker's name was presented for the property to be sold to a developer. The land cost US$712,000, and an attorney for Lincoln County in Maine revealed that the three allegedly purchased properties all over the country with the money they milked from the old woman.

The three were then charged with endangering the welfare of a dependent person. They pleaded no contest leaving them not to be found guilty, but are now on probation. Only US$7,000 has been retrieved from the trio and was surrendered to Cheiker.

Cheiker now lives in a nursing home in Maine after she was found by the authorities and her exact whereabouts are kept confidential for her safety.
