Netflix now requires users sign-up for a "Platinum Plan" at US$11.99 per month to access its limited collection of 4K content.
Some sources said Netflix no longer offers its standard streaming plan, the price of which increased from US$7.99 to US$8.99.
New subscribers have to pay US$12 monthly to acquire Netflix's ultra high definition (UHD) video streams. Current customers that avail the streaming plan before August 12, however, will have their rate locked to the current US$7.99 for two years.

With the family streaming plan, users can enjoy the best viewing experience. Subscribers can stream 4K content from Netflix across four different devices at once using one account.
Among the shows available in the 4K catalog are Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2 and The Smurfs 2.
Netflix told media the company decided to move 4K UHD video into their four-stream plan for new members that sign-up and care about the highest-quality video Netflix offers.
Netflix said the price hike is due to the higher costs of upgrading and maintaining streaming services of this quality, reports said.
