Rising Divorce Rate in China Alarms Government

Couples who divorce over a wide array of reasons are on the rise in China and authorities are alarmed over this phenomenon.
Statistics show that around 10,000 marriages break up every day, and couples opting for divorce have risen over the last 10 years.
Chinese civil affairs officials are trying to arrest the growing number of divorce rates by introducing measures to save the marriages such as counseling services and hotline services.

Also, social workers have been tapped by the government to mediate between the couples in communities and provide counseling services to the couples who are on the brink of separation.
Scholars blame the current laws on marriage which provide easy ways to get a divorce, something that was difficult to happen years ago.
Zhang Shifeng, head of the Department of Social Affairs at the Ministry of Civil Affairs, said there were more than 3 million divorces recorded in 2012, a more than a hundred percent increase over 2003.
Zhang said that although statistics for 2013 have yet to be released, he said that the divorce rate would continue to rise in the next couple of years.
Zhang said that the couples' issues are varied and complicated, but mostly their decision to separate is usually impulsive.
Divorce and family lawyers said that couples in their 20s and 30s in urban areas usually do not try to adjust to their differences or concede to each other, leaving their marriages in a fragile state.
Among the top reasons for the high percentage of divorce rates in China are domestic violence, extramarital affairs and lack of communication.
Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin are the most hit in rising divorce rates. Beijing alone recorded 164,000 marriages in 2013 with 55,000 ending in divorce in the same year.
Other reasons why couples split are tax issues, the purchase of property and other seemingly mundane issues.
