(Photo : Reuters) Apple is offering a SIM-free iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on the U.S. store, allowing customers to choose their carrier.

Chinese website Tencent claims Chinese e-commerce site Jingdong Mall and Chinese mobile service providers were responsible for 20 million preorders of Apple, Inc's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus since preorders began the previous Friday.

MacRumors, a website that aggregates Apple and Mac related news, rumors and reports, said 9.5 million preorders can be traced to Jingdong Mall, or JD.com, while 10 million preorders came from China Unicom, China Telecom and China Mobile, the three major mobile networks in the country.

While the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were made available in some regions of the world on Sept. 19, China was excluded in the initial launch party due to delays in the regulatory approval of new phones.

The new iPhones had to receive approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to access the nation's networks before retailers sell the handsets. The green light for retailers finally arrived in the latter part of September.

The latest mobile devices from Apple will hit retailers across China this Friday.

The true number of preorders is debatable, said a report from Fortune, which considered the 20 million number is a "big if." While it did note the 9.5 million preorders from Jingdong as of Monday, it remained skeptical of the real total.

Reservations for the iPhone 6 models reportedly hit two million in China in the first six hours.

Reservations, on the other hand, aren't similar to preorders. While a preorder is an actual transaction between a retailer and a consumer, a reservation is just a commitment to buy or preorder an item.
