China launches organ donation website.
To address the critical shortage of organs in the country China, on Wednesday, launched a website that features information on how to donate organs, and allows people to register as donors.
It is the first official system for organ donation in China since the State Council issued an organ transplant regulation in 2007. Following the regulation, the government introduced an organ donation system in 2010, which attracted a number of willing donors.

Operated by the China Organ Donation Administration Center, the website, china-organdonation.org.cn, provides a wealth of information about how one can donate an organ and other details one should know when donating.
The website is linked to Chinese administrative offices and Red Cross societies around the country, the official statement said.
Red Cross Society of China Executive Vice President Zhao Baige said that while China has made improvements in organ donation in recent years, the country still faces critical shortage of organs and organ donors.
He stressed that China each year records 300,000 patients in need of organ transplants while organ supply is only good for 10,000 patients annually.
In the United States, Zhao said the organ supply and demand ratio is 1:3, which means one in every three patients that need new organs receive an operation every year.
"The website is aimed at promoting public awareness on the importance of public donation," Zhao said.
Organ donation in China is not as popular as in Western countries. Organ donors in Western countries sign a pledge to donate their organs in case they perish in accidents. Chinese culture and tradition, however, dictate that dead persons are buried or cremated with their organs intact. This makes it difficult for people to sign up as donors.
Zhao, however, said public perception on organ donation has improved over the years as more Chinese people have made the pledge to become organ donors.
