China Owns the World's Largest Aquarium

The world's second largest economy has outdone other countries of the world in the least expected of areas: by replicating the vastness of the sea in a glass tank.

China now owns the largest aquarium ever constructed on earth, according to Guinness.

The Chimelong Ocean Kingdom located in Guangdong's Henqin island, near Macao, set five world records in the Guinness Book:

It is the world's largest aquarium, holding a total of 48.75 million liters of fresh and saltwater.

It has the world's largest aquarium tank, containing 22.7 million liters of saltwater for the sharks.

It has the world's largest acrylic panel at 39.6 by 8.3 meters, through which the whale sharks can be seen, and for which it also set the record as the world's largest aquarium window.

It has the world's largest underwater viewing dome, where visitors can walk through, wave and gawk at all sorts of marine life, through glass.

Beat that!

It took three years and more than US$800 million to build China's newest waterworld attraction, which sits on a 143-hectare land that also houses the ecologically-themed Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel-Park complex.

Visitors and hotel guests can easily access the Ocean Kingdom via a kilometer-long grand canal or by taking water taxis that run between the hotel and the park.

The park itself has seven themed areas, namely the Ocean Main Street, the Dolphin Cove, Amazing Amazon, Ocean Wonders, Polar Adventure, Colorful World and the Mount Walrus.

Designed by PGAV Destinations, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is the first Asian theme-park that combines animal exhibits, themed entertainment shows, thrill rides, a circus, and a 5D cinema where the audience can experience on-screen thrill with moving theater seats and other sensory effects.

Chimelong is looking to add more sharks and dolphins to its current collection of marine life.
