Two on two mixed martial arts (MMA) fights are now legal and have been approved in the State of Mississippi. It has been dubbed, "Arena Combat."
The idea of a tag team match - or one that consists of more than two fighters - is an unfamiliar one to the sport of MMA.
It is usually relegated to the world of professional wrestling, where matches can have as many as 30 people in the ring, like in the World Wrestling Entertainment's Royal Rumble match.

If the word "never" was attached to the idea awhile back, whoever thought so should now learn that one should "never say never," as the Mississippi Athletic Commission has taken interesting actions and approve 2-on-2 MMA fights.
Previously, there had been a Russian promotion called "Hip Show," that pitted as much as five fighters on each team in one MMA match. The organization usually put their fights up on the internet.
While it seemed not to catch on, last May the organization made a bold claim and said that it 2-on-2 fights would become legal soon enough. Their predictions had come true.
The organization has been renamed to "Hip Show," and is now owned by hosts of MMA: Inside the Cage, Oxendine and Cyrus Fees.
In Oxendine's recent interview with MMAFighting, he had stated that Arena Combat is the most exciting sport on the planet. He predicts that its popularity will grow, just as traditional MMA did some twenty years ago.
Apart from the team fights, Arena Combat has a distinction over other fight organizations due to its ring.
It is not like the regular cage or octagon any MMA fight promotion has. Instead, it is a really large cage with obstacles and different landscapes inside that fighters can climb, hide under, and utilize.
Only time will tell though if it will a step forward or backward for MMA.
