After more than ten years, Mainland Chinese actress Zhou Xun finally makes it back to the small screen, returning as Jui Er in the upcoming series 'Red Sorghum'.
Zhou is making her small-screen comeback by playing the lead female role in the series adaptation of 'Red Sorghum' which is based on the novel entitled 'Red Sorghum Clan' which was written by acclaimed author Mo Yan.

The same novel has been made into a film that goes with the same title in the 1980s which featured actress Gong Li who shot to fame due to her performance in the production.
Though Zhou has been chosen to play the female lead in the drama version, some have wondered whether the actress can pull off the role of Jiu Er, taking into account her rather elegant appearance compared to the poor girl, who lived during the Second Sino-Japanese War, she has to portray.
Zhou is known to portray women of beauty and elegance in her previous roles such as that of Princess Taiping in 'Palace of Desire' due to her elfin features which made some critics doubt whether she can remake the role of a simple lady from Shandong.
Despite the doubts, director Zheng Xiao Long and the writer of the novel, Mo Yan, both put their confidence in the actress, saying that she had a very similar personality to Jiu Er who is described as tenacious.
"After watching the trailer, I was very excited. Zhou Xun is a very good actress who is exceptionally moldable," said Mo Yan, adding that he looks forward to her performance in the drama.
As for the plotline of the drama version, it has been revealed that it would be focusing on the details taken from the novel. Zheng explained that he wanted the drama to have the same kind of feel as that of the original novel.
'Red Sorghum' will also feature Zhu Yawen and Huang Xuan, both of whom will be playing additional characters to the drama, while Qin Hailu will be portraying the role of Jiu Er's first love.
The drama will debut on October 27 and will air on Dragon TV, Beijing TV, Zhejiang TV and Shandong TV.
