Former World No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro to Return in 2015

Former World No. 4 and 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro announced that he will return to tennis in 2015 after recovery from his left wrist surgery.

The 26-year-old Argentine has undergone surgery on his left wrist last March and with the advice of his coaches and medical team, after a thorough analysis, del Potro decided to delay his comeback.

"The recovery from my wrist surgery is slow and won't let me be in a competitive level to face the best players in the world in the last two tournaments of the year," del Potro said. "I prefer to be patient, prudent and prepare for next year. I don't have pain anymore. I've been feeling better day by day."

The two remaining tournaments he mentioned are the Swiss Indoors in Basel where he is defending champion and the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris where he is runner-up to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Del Potro won the crown in Flushing Meadows when he defeated then top seeded Roger Federer in an epic five setter after he clobbered Rafael Nadal in the semis in three sets.

The Argentine started his campaign as top seed in Sydney early this year winning the Apia International crown against Australian Bernard Tomic in two sets.

He then went on to compete in the Australian Open as fifth seed but lost early in the second round against Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.

Del Potro returned to World No. 4 after Australia and then competed as second seed at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February where he retired after losing the first set due to wrist injury.

He dropped to World No. 8 after not competing in two Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.

On March 24, del Potro went into surgery to repair damaged ligaments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Del Potro is currently ranked No. 29 and is doing intensive pre-season training in preparation for his title defense in Sydney.
