Tech company Apple, Inc. accidentally revealed images of the new iPad Mini and iPad Air in an official user guide to the company's iOS 8 operating system for iBooks in the iTunes Store.

Besides showing the devices, the images also show the new feature of the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. There's also news a Burst Mode feature that allows users to capture "rapid-fire" pictures will be present on the iPad Air 2.

Besides the extra features, the new iPads seem to be similar to previous models, according to CNET's Dara Kerr.

She also said it's likely Apple hopes the new devices will give its tablet lineup a boost. As the public shifted from tablets to the more compact smartphones, sales if iPads have slowed.

Although the iPad is still a top seller among tablets, it hasn't really changed much since the first edition came out in 2010. Smartphones, on the other hand, are replaced every couple of years or less, making consumers hang on to tablets for a longer haul.

Aside from the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air, Apple is expected to announce  a new lineup of Macs and give more information about Apple's OS X Yosemite operating system, which was revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino Thursday.

In an event held in September, the company gave consumers a glimpse of the Apple Watch, its entry into the wearable tech market, and debuted two iPhone models with one larger than the other.

Tech news site Recode said the event on Thursday will be a "more laid back affair," opting to use the company's headquarters over other possible venues.

Apple has hosted big launch events before, such as the one where Steve Jobs, Apple's late co-founder, had Irish rock band U2 as guest performers when it introduced the first-ever Macintosh computer.
