Warner Bros. to film Harry Potter Spinoff

Is Warner Bros. Hinting at Two More Harry Potter Movies?

Harry Potter's wizardry and world of magic is hitting the big screen soon with the spin-off of the best-selling novel-turned-movie now helmed no other than J.K. Rowling herself. But there would be no Harry Potter here because the events are set 70 years before Harry Potter's time, and will follow the adventures of Newt Scamander.

Harry Potter fans might remember Scamander as the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a book which Harry had to buy. The textbook's title will actually serve as the title of the trilogy's first series.

"Potter" veteran David Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, is slated to direct this film and will join forces with David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara revealed at the company's investors conference Wednesday.

"Jo has a vision for this extension of the franchise, and for the first time, she is writing the script for what she believes is at least a trilogy," Tsujihara continues.

Newt Scamander - a magizoologist (a person who is an expert in magical creatures) - was mentioned as the author of the 42-page textbook. The Harry Potter book first hit bookstores in 2001.

Horry Potter author J.K. Rowling was excited about this project. "I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about," Rowling says in a statement, "and this is it."

The story begins in New York and not in London where the original series was set, although Rowling explains that the laws and customs that have mesmerized audiences before will still be seen in the movie. However, the new film's events will not have a significant direct relationship to what happened in Harry Potter.

Meanwhile, Tsujihara explained that Warner Bros. is still committed to keeping the Harry Potter spirit alive and felt in the movie. The movie series remains the highest grossing film franchise in history, which earned a cumulative gross of US$7.7 billion in global box office earnings.
