Shanxi Man Wears Bear Disguise to Claim Lottery Winnings

(Photo : China News) A man from Shanxi province goes to collect his US$84.4 million lottery winnings in a bear costume, and is mobbed by media.

A lucky man from Shanxi province in China's north region probably didn't want to have instant relatives and long-lost friends take advantage of him winning 520 million yuan - the equivalent of US$85 million - in China's lottery.

So he wore a bear disguise before going into the Shanxi welfare lottery office and claiming the prize.

He also gave quite an amusing press conference, when local media crews cornered him before he was able to get out of the lottery office.

A few months ago, also in China, a person dressed up as Mickey Mouse took home 398 million yuan, and in 2011 another lucky winner took the big 565 million yuan jackpot disguised as a panda. Others have worn superhero masks to look like Batman or Spiderman, or the Power Rangers.

China began offering the lotto in 1987. Although the government encourages lottery winners to show themselves and help portray legitimacy in the lotto system, winners can decide to disgise themselves and decline to grant media interviews.

This is what the man did. The man said he spent between 20,000 and 30,000 yuan on lottery tickets every year.

But he didn't want the press conference to linger. Minutes later, he asked to be led away on his request.
