Taiwanese actor Kai Ko has avoided jail time for now as the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on Wednesday granted his request to undergo voluntary drug rehabilitation in a hospital as a condition for deferred prosecution.

Taiwanese media reported that the prosecutors allowed the 23-year old actor to get treatment for drug addiction in a hospital at his own expense after "he has shown remorse and has been truthful with the authorities."

The court summoned Ko on Wednesday for questioning related to the latest results of his toxicology report.

During the hearing that lasted nearly two hours, the prosecutors said the result of the toxicology test matched the actor's previous statement that he had only smoked marijuana over the past two years.

Ko's urine and hair samples have been submitted earlier to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for testing.

The office has also acquired documents from the trial the actor had to go through in China.

Following the court's decision, Ko asked the court to let him undergo treatment at the Cathay General Hospital.

However, the prosecutors said that anyone who had been caught on category two offenses under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act of Taiwan could only receive drug rehabilitation treatment at the Songde Branch of the Taipei City Hospital.

The prosecutors agreed to postpone prosecution for about a year and a half to two years, while the actor undergoes drug treatment at the said hospital.

During the rehabilitation period, the prosecutors said Ko will have to cooperate with the treatment schedule and be subjected to regular urine tests.

If he is found to have used drugs again, the deferred prosecution will be revoked and his drug-related case will go on trial.

Ko, along with Chinese actor Jaycee Chan, was arrested on August 14 after they were caught smoking marijuana at a foot massage parlor in Beijing.

He was released and returned to Taiwan on August 30.

According to Ko, he got the weed from Jaycee, the son of international action star Jackie Chan, and smoked it while in China.

Police then subsequently raided young Chan's home, where they found around 100 grams of weed.

Jaycee, who is facing the criminal charge of providing a venue for drug use, has been in the custody of Chinese authorities for more than two months now.

Meanwhile, Ko told reporters after the court hearing that he will not take marijuana again and vowed to be a better person in the future.

He also apologized to his film colleagues who have been banned from China as part of its crackdown on celebrities using drugs.

"I did something wrong and has caused a lot of pressure to directors, actors, co-stars, and people who are linked to me. I am deeply sorry," the actor said.

Ko, whose real name is Ko Chen-tung, rose to fame after he won the Golden Horse for Best New Performer in 2011 for his role in the hit romantic movie "You are the apple of my eye."
