Top seeded wild card entry David defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany 7-5 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals at the Erste Bank Open in Austria on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Spaniard saved all break points he faced, broke the German late in the game in the first set and twice in the second set to progress into the next round.

Ferrer committed four double faults in the match but converted 31 of 39 first serves in the hour and 28 minute matchup.

"The first set was difficult," Ferrer said. "Only after I won that set did I play better - a more solid and more consistent game."

The World No. 5 is in pursuit of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals where he is on the verge of surpassing eighth placer Canadian star Milos Raonic in the eight-man short list to London.

Raonic, who is currently competing at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, failed on his quest to extend his lead as he lost his opening match against Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis in three sets.

The loss of Raonic means that Ferrer will surpass him if the Spaniard progresses to the semifinals.

Ferrer will now face hard-hitting sixth seeded Ivo Karlovic who defeated Austrain Jurgen Melzer in the second round.

The veteran Karlovic currently holds the most service aces this year, having smashed 1,020 aces in 56 matches.

The match against the 35-year-old Croatian will not be a walk in the park for Ferrer who only delivered 38 percent of first serve returns and 50 percent of second serves.

If Ferrer doesn't improve, Karlovic might be the one to walk all over him.

On the other side of the top half, fourth seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber dropped the first set but came back strong to defeat Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 3-6 6-1 6-4.

Kohlschreiber has setup an all-German encounter against fellow compatriot Benjamin Becker, no relation to six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker, who won over Robin Haase of the Netherlands in two straight sets 6-3 6-3.
