Peters was suspected for firing a rifle through the front door of his home as the two deputies were called in the area to respond to a domestic disturbance report. The officers arrived at around 1:30 in the morning due to the call of a friend of the Peters, who was in another state.
Peters allegedly kept firing at the door without opening it to check who was knocking at that time of the night. His wife and his children were said to be in their home, and were later found uninjured by the police officials.
Both deputies have been rushed to a hospital as they have been injured from the said shooting. One of the two deputies, who is a seven-year veteran in the sheriff's office, was shot in the torso and leg. He is said to be in serious condition after undergoing surgery at the hospital. However, no additional details about him were given out by McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren.
As for the other deputy, Nygren noted that she is in good condition and was only shot in the leg. The deputy is a 12-year veteran in the office of the sheriff.
Nygren added that there were a lot of deputies deployed in order to catch the culprit who fled from the scene immediately after the shooting. It is still unclear how Peters escaped since all the vehicles of the family were already accounted for.
The deputies subsequently went on a door-to-door operation in the village to assure that residents were unharmed.
Peters is said to be a military veteran. However, no immediate knowledge about his military service were provided, as well as what he is doing now for a living. The investigation is still ongoing and charges have not been raised yet.
