Top seeded Tomas Berdych won his opening match against Dustin Brown 7-5 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals at the If Stockholm Open in Sweden on Thursday.

The World No. 7 Berdych dished out a total of seven aces and saved all three break points he faced. He also won 30 of his 32 first serves that ultimately led to the German qualifiers demise.

Berdych, 29, is also seeking a spot at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London this coming November. He is currently seventh place with 3,945 points just 195 points ahead of Milos Raonic in the eight-man short list.

The Canadian star failed on his quest to accumulate valuable points as he lost his opening match against Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis in three sets at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

The China Open finalist needs to accumulate more points in the final three tournaments before the prestigious event in order to clinch a spot.

World No. 5 David Ferrer and Britain's No. 1 Andy Murray are currently 9th and 10th place respectively with Ferrer just 230 points behind him.

This week's ATP events are part of the World Tour 250 series which means that the winner of these events will collect 250 points. That alone would have a huge impact on the positioning of the players in the list and with a 500 series next week plus a Masters 1000 event late this month, the three remaining spots for the year-ender is still a toss-up between five players.

Berdych will now face another qualifier Marius Copil of Romania in the quarterfinals who defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France 6-4 6-4.

Two upsets occurred in the other part of the top half as fourth seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov was edged by Adrian Mannarino of France in three sets 4-6 7(7)-6(2) 6(4)-7(7).

Mannarino will go up against German qualifier Matthias Bahinger in the quarters that outlasted fifth seeded Argentine Leonardo Mayer also in three sets 7(7)-6(3) 6(4)-7(7) 6-3.
