Joan Rivers died from low blood oxygen, the medical examiner's office ruled on Thursday, October 16.

The "Fashion Police" host died from low blood oxygen on September 4 during a routine medical procedure. This procedure was said to check for any voice changes or reflux.

The comedienne has been in the hospital for a week prior to her death. She was rushed there after she went into a cardiac arrest during the procedure at a doctor's office.

The low blood oxygen caused Rivers to pass on because of "anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest", or brain damage due to lack of oxygen. Her upper gastrointestinal tract and vocal folds were being scoped when it happened, the spokeswoman for the city's medical examiner reported.

Her death is said to be a complication from the medical procedure. It is also said in an article in People magazine that the classification is not commonly used.

Rivers was said to have been under the influence of a sedative called proposal when she was being examined.

Also investigating her case is the state Health Department.

Melissa Rivers, the comedienne's daughter and partner on television, had no comment on the ruling.

"We continue to be saddened by our tragic loss and grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and support from around the world," Melissa Rivers said in a statement.

Rivers and her daughter worked together on Fashion police where the elder Rivers hosted and her daughter produced. Rivers is known for her snarky comments and raucous behavior.
