Charice Opens Up to Oprah Winfrey About Sexuality, Gender

When Filipino singer Charice Pempengco first met Oprah Winfrey in 2008 on her talk show, she was still sporting a sweet, teen image, was in smooth brunette locks, soft makeup, and with girly innocence. She was then conquering the world stage as a singer.
Six years on, Charice has already established her career capped by a best-selling album with chart-topping hits, singing duets with music icons and a stint in the hit TV series Glee.

And her professional transformation also extended to her personal life.
The 22-year-old has eventually shed her feminine image and decided to be true to herself, wearing rocking short and blonde hair in the stereotypically masculine type.
In 2013, after months of media speculation, Charice admitted that she is a lesbian. She is now in a committed relationship.
In an interview with Oprah which will be shown in this weekend's episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now?, the singing sensation talks about her sexuality.
Charice admits that even when she was a child she already knew that she was gay.
"I was in grade school and I saw this girl, and I felt different. I didn't know what it was, but I just knew... it felt special. And when I was 10, I was like 'Oh, that's it, I'm gay.' I found the word for who I really am," she said.
When asked by the celebrated talk show host if ever she struggled with her gender identity, she replied:
"Not exactly transitioning to, like, a male-male."
Charice knew that her soul is male, but "I'm not going to go through that stage where I'm going to change everything."
While the singer has no plans to change anything in her body to make her even closer to becoming a male, she has, however, altered her personal style to make her more masculine, including cutting her hair and wearing boy's clothes.
Watch Charice's full interview with Oprah on Oprah: Where Are They Now? this Sunday, Oct. 19, at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
