The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has released a statement saying that former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (GSP) has been cleared to resume training.

UFC President Dana White and Chairman/CEO Lorenzo Fertitta flew to Montreal earlier this week to see how St-Pierre had been doing.

They found out that the fighter had heard back from his doctor and had cleared him to resume his mixed martial arts (MMA) training just seven months after tearing his left ACL during a workout.

White said that it typically takes about 30 days after surgery to feel mentally right to compete again. However, he assured that St-Pierre was in a good place and that he felt mentally right.

St-Pierre stepped away from the UFC after defeating current welterweight champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 with a razor-close decision.

He took time away from MMA in order to figure out his next move.

White though, is quite hopeful for St-Pierre's return to the octagon. He is sure that somewhere down the line, the fighter from Canada will return to UFC, but he has not worked out all the logistics yet.

"He'll let us know when he's ready," White said.

Firas Zahabi, Head Coach of St-Pierre, told ESPN last month that he feels the fighter will return to fighting next year.

Zahabi told ESPN's Brett Okamoto that St-Pierre had a lot of competitive juices. However, he won't be in shape until he is in his mid-34's.

He also cited earlier this year that he couldn't take all the fighters using Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs), saying it wasn't fair really.

However, the UFC has slowly taken steps towards remedying that by having a random drug tests for all fighters in the roster, year round.
