Japan's Nuclear Power Plants Near Active Volcanoes can Cause Nationwide Disaster

Experts say Japan's devastating earthquake in 2011 won't be its last mega quake since frequent volcanic eruptions loom on the horizon.

The unprecedented eruption of Japan's second tallest volcano, Mount Ontake in central Japan, is causing concern among authorities about the state of volcanoes in the region.

The Ontake eruption is Japan's deadliest volcanic eruption in the last 90 years. The country could possibly face more volcanic activity from another source: the March 11, 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake according to volcanologist Toshitsugu Fujii, from the University of Tokyo.

Fujii said the 2011 quake shook the underlying ground in Japan so violently it may have caused Japan's volcanoes to become more active than the usual.

Japan has 110 active volcanoes. Some of these are located underneath the oceans and remote islands, of which 47 are closely monitored.

Fujii also admits Japan currently doesn't have enough volcano experts, meaning the volcanoes can't be tenaciously observed. Small changes in activity are already missed and these could add up to impending volcanic eruptions.

Predictions of volcano eruptions have become more challenging and Fujii says the nine major eruptions only provided a mere few hours of warning.

Japan's nuclear power plants are also worrying as they may trigger more volcanic eruptions due to their close proximity to one another.

Although local nuclear regulators refuted this idea and claims the Sendai power plant located in southern Japan isn't safe, Fujii dismisses their complacency by pointing out the reactors are located within the vicinity of several active volcanoes.

Fujii says Mount Sakurajima, an active volcano located 25 miles from the power plant, could very well emit a pyroclastic flow that could easily reach the plant.

Volcanic predictions are impossible in the next 40 years he said. Fujii thinks nuclear power control is based on political red tape and the government should think twice about strategic locations for power plants in Japan.
