OS X 10.10 Yosemite is loaded with new features, but the most exciting among them has to be its new communication abilities where a Mac can be used as a hub to manage both incoming and outgoing phone calls.

Phone calling in Yosemite works with an iPhone, which is both activated with iOS 8 update and a carrier plan.

In order to place calls, users must first install the FaceTime application. They must see to it that they are signed in on both their iPhone and their Mac using a same Apple ID and that both devices are connected to similar Wi-Fi network.

Users can make phone calls by using the FaceTime app, the Contacts app or by selecting numbers on a website or even in plain text. By operating with Yosemite to dial mobile numbers, users don't need to do anything with their iPhone as the call itself will be automatically routed through their Mac.

By default, the phone call is in speakerphone mode, but it will also be handled in headphones and mics.

A ringtone will automatically play for each incoming call with an accompanying notification on the upper right side of the screen. Users can choose to accept or decline the call, with an option of setting a reminder or replying a message.

In addition, SMS messages will also be transmitted from the iPhone to the Messages app on the Mac. Users can reply by using their Mac where the message will be converted back to SMS and will be sent to the intended recipient.
