DiCaprio's conservation foundation gave the funds to Ocean 5, international funders’ collaborative, to support marine conservation projects around the world. Ocean 5 is supporting non-profit organizations and groups working on ocean conservation projects on different parts of the globe.

"The sad truth is that less than two percent of our oceans are fully protected. We need to change that now,” said the Titanic hero in a statement.

“Django Unchained” and “The Great Gatsby” lead actor said that the awarded funds will help in creating projects that concern protected areas in the Pacific Islands and the Arctic, continuing the improvement of the enforcement of fishing regulations in Europe, the United States and Central America, and lastly, protecting the threatened shark populations.

In 2013, the A-list Hollywood actor's foundation also awarded a US$3 million grant to the World Wildlife Fund, to help in the improvement of the tiger population in Nepal and raised US$38.8 million via donations and an art auction at Christie’s in New York.

DiCaprio established his conservation foundation in 1998. It has a goal to protect the environment and preserve the planet’s natural resources and wildlife.
