While the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment has been a success in many countries whose primary language is English, "Guardians of the Galaxy" did not do so well in China.
The culprit for the so-so reception of the movie? Bad subtitles.
The movie finally opened in China. Though it did okay in its opening weekend, response from reviewers and moviegoers have been mixed. They said that the subtitles were poorly translated.

Critics and fans said that the subtitles made it difficult to enjoy the movie because they did not get the humor.
China Daily published popular Chinese social media user Gudabaihua's post on the translation mistakes. He counted at least 80 mistakes in translation.
"Aside from a lot of mistranslations, the subtitles failed to show the original feel of the movie, such as jokes, puns and homophones. We cannot help but doubt the professionalism of the translator," Gudabaihua said.
It seems that "Guardians of the Galaxy" is the only Marvel movie that did not do well in China. The Chinese audience greatly enjoyed the X-men movies.
The movie, which is based on the comic book about misfits from different parts of the cosmos, was also not popular because a lot of people were unfamiliar with it, aside from hardcore Marvel fans.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" opened in October 10 in China. It earned 191 million yuan ($31.2 million) on its first three days -- which pales in comparison to movies like "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "X-men: Days of Future Past."
This is not the first time that a successful Hollywood movie did not do well in China. Big movies like "Pacific Rim," "The Hunger Games," even the James Bond flick, "Skyfall" all were received in a lukewarm manner because of poor translations.
