The tragic news was shared with her fans after she succumbed to Endometrial cancer Saturday morning.
Borgella, who lost her battle with the Big C with faith and courage, had chronicled her cancer treatments on Twitter.
The singer-songwriter got her first taste of the spotlight in 2005 when she appeared on Oxygen's Mo'Nique's Fat Chance under the name Miss F.A.T.
But it was only when she appeared on the 7th season of American Idol in 2008, and made it to the top 12 girls and overall top 24 before she was eliminated, that she began to make a name for herself.
In October 2013, she revealed she was suffering from a 'rare case' of the illness immediately after being diagnosed with cancer, which had spread from her uterus to her chest.
She went on to share her story in video and blog posts by regularly updating her fans on her progress.
"It's really not about a stage [of disease]. God is with me and I feel his presence every day," she said about her condition.
"I just wanted to share this information with everyone to let them know what I'm going through and I'm going to update everyone every week as much as I can," she added.
Borgella, in her last Facebook message on September 23, appeared to be in good spirits as she shared her latest round of radiation treatment. She even shared a photo, where she looked healthy and full of life.
"Gooooood morning!! We are heading back to radiation for 2 procedures!! God is with us!! I have lots to fill you in on.. The presence of The Lord is here.. Prayers up!!! I love you guys (sic)," Borgella wrote.
The Borgella and Ramirez families urged her fans to "take the time to educate yourselves on Endometrial Cancer and support research efforts".
