"Fury" Tops Box-Office, Collects $23 Million

The Brad Pitt-starrer World War II tank drama Fury was a huge blockbuster, tanking competition and earning a whopping $23.5 million at the weekend box office.

Fury's easy success grabbed the top spot from Reese Witherspoon-led Gone Girl,  which took $17.8 million and was a box-office supreme for two weekends in a row.

Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña and Scott Eastwood join Pitt in the cast under the direction of David Ayer.

The film's intense scene immediately wowed fans and critics alike. Movie aggregator RottenTomatoes gave it 80% score, while CinemaScore gave it A-minus.

Despite its limited release,  Alejandro Inarritu's Birdman, which hit four theaters earned $415,000 (averaging $103,750 per theater). That makes it the second-highest opening average for a film this year on a per-theater basis after Grand Budapest Hotel.

The film features Batman star Michael Keaton as the manqué superhero star who attempts to recapture his glory days. Keaton's performance is widely hailed for its award-winning potentionals.

The 3D animation The Book of Life, which features the directorial debut of Jorge Gutierrez, placed third $17 million. Diego Luna, Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana lend their voice in the production helmed by Guillermo Del Torro.

The Best of Me starts its weekend at a rather unacceptable $10.2 million. The film, adapted from Nicholas Sparks' novel, was released to cater the female audiences. Author Sparks aired his hopes that audiences might find this traditional horror movie season romantic.

Universal's Dracula Untold, which tells the origin of the notorious character, dropped to number six with $9.9 million after fighting to stay on top. Nevertheless, it already earned an $136.4 million.

Disney's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day made it to the number five spot in its second weekend with $12 million ($37 million total), while Robert Downey Jr.'s The Judge dropped to seventh spot with $7.9 million ($26.8 million total).
