Sincerity Machine: a Typewriter yhat only Writes in Comic Sans

Next to Helvetica, the font called Comic Sans is probably the most reviled font or typeface on the planet.

And that's surprising since the man who made Comic Sans, Vincent Connare, designed the font in 1994 to imitate the look of comic book lettering for use in informal documents such as letters and reports.

Comic Sans was first released by Microsoft Corporation and is a standard font in MS Office.

Problem is, Comic Sans won no respect as a non-comic book font. The font's continued popularity led to calls to ban Comic Sans, which gained a reputation as a humorous font.

This brouhaha might seem surprising to non-typographers, graphic artists or design artists, but it's all about appropriateness. Comic Sans is a clown font suitable only for comic books, hence its name, Comic Sans.

In the midst of this controversy comes an artist from Pittsburgh named Jesse England who installed Comic Sans in his 1970's Sears-branded Brother Charger 11 typewriter.

England's invention is a first: a typewriter that only writes in Comic Sans.

By doing this England's trying to prove Comic Sans needs to be recognized and shouldn't take flak for being a font unsuitable for serious use. England uploaded a video on YouTube explaining the case for Comic Sans.

"It's a mark of sincerity from those who do not have graphic design experience," he said.

He noted he's not exactly charmed by the font but it's worth giving Comic Sans a chance.

England used a laser engraver to install the Comic Sans font on the typewriter's keys. He glued the letters onto the strikers of the typewriter and viola, the Sincerity Machine.

England said it wasn't his goal to attract attention but what he did is part of his ongoing thesis in questioning how to create, consume, and store the media.

"It's my wish that a classic, functioning typewriter altered to write in the most popularly despised font of modern times will provoke thoughts about such media concerns."
