Oscar de la Renta dies at 82 after 50 Years of Dressing America's Most Famous Ladies

Fashion designer and "Guru of Glamor" Oscar de la Renta died on Monday after spending more than half of his life dressing royalties including a number of American first ladies.

The New York Times reported his death at 82-years-old and was confirmed by his spouse, Annette de la Renta on Monday.

During the 50 years that he shared his designs with the world, De la Renta became a fashion icon, especially in the U.S. as many celebrities and personalities alike considered it a privilege to wear his designs.

Aside from celebrities such as Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, and Jessica Biel, he also designed dresses for U.S. first ladies such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush.

"He makes a woman look like a woman, feel like a woman. He has that old-fashioned elegance, and yet he's able to interpret it in such a modern way," designer Diane von Furstenberg said as she described the iconic fashion design mogul in a video tribute at an exhibit at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.

His most recent masterpiece was worn by George Clooney's bride, formerly Amal Allamudin, during their wedding.

Born on July 22, 1932 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, de la Renta began his journey towards studying arts in Madrid when he was 18 years old after his terminally ill mother urged him to pursue art.

During that time, the renowned fashion guru developed his interest in fashion designing and started out as an apprentice to Cristóbal Balenciaga, who later became his mentor.

De la Renta then landed a job with Lanvin in the iconic fashion center of Paris, France and later moved to New York City

In 1969, he became an American citizen and acquired the title of being the very first American to become a French fashion shop's top designer.

After that, he had received a numerous commendations and awards including a Council of Fashion Designers Lifetime Achievement Award, two CFDA Designer of the Year Awards, and two COTY Awards.
