Companies all across the world are trying to create new technology to make contact sports safer for athletes. Force Impact Technologies is next up to reveal their newest creation, the FITGuard, which is essentially a mouth guard that's able to detect potential concussion-level impacts.

There are nearly 4 million sports-related concussions per year. Some 47 percent of those athletes with concussions never report that they have concussion-like symptoms, according to Force Impact Technologies (FIT).

FIT has gathered a vast amount of data from clinical research to be able to determine impact thresholds. The device can detect whether the impact was over the safety threshold and could potentially have caused a concussion for the player.

These impact safety thresholds vary depending on each player, so the FITGuard has the ability to input the user's age, weight and gender into the device to receive a more accurate detection.

The device has built in accelerometers and sensors. When these sensors detect an impact higher than the safety threshold, a row of LED lights on the mouth guard turns red. If the impact is below safety threshold, then the lights turn green.

An alert is then instantly sent to a coach's smartphone via Bluetooth on whether the impact with the player was in the red and should be taken out of the game, or green and should be okay to continue playing.

Similar technologies have been used within the helmets of players in certain contact sports like American Football. However, according to FIT, a mouth guard is much more effective when estimating impact forces to the brain.
