Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan edged out third seeded Stan Wawrinka in three sets while fourth seeded Milos Raonic has advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Tuesday.

Kukushkin was spot on with his serves in the first set as he held back the Australian Open champion behind the lines and put pressure on Wawrinka with his brilliant service returns that finally broke the Swiss to submit to defeat.

Both players exchanged breaks in the second set but eventually held on to their serves to send the set into a tie-break where Wawrinka delivered six straight points to level the match.

Wawrinka was plagued with unforced errors in the third and deciding set as Kukushkin jumped all over every opportunity and seized a chance to serve out for the match after Wawrinka committed a double fault on his serve to admit defeat 6-4 6(1)-7(7) 6-3.

"I really just stuck around in that first set," said Raonic. "I made the most of my opportunities in the tie-break. I felt I was getting a little bit better and better. Obviously I need to get significantly better for my next match, but I feel like I'm on the right track."

Kukushkin will face German Benjamin Becker in the second round who defeated qualifier Gastao Elias of Portugal in two sets 6-3 6-2.

In other second day matches, fourth seeded Milos Raonic keeps his bid alive for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London as he disposed of American Steve Johnson after a first set scare to win the match 7(7)-6(4) 6-4.

The 23-year-old Canadian connected a total of 12 service aces and saved all five break points he faced to win his first ATP World Tour 250 tournament.

Next up for the Citi Open champion is Donald Young of the United States who made his way to the second round after defeating Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in two sets 7(7)-6(5) 6-4.

In other matches, eighth seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia also made it through the second round after defeating an unfortunate Lukas Rosol in straight sets 7(7)-6(4) 6-3. He faces French qualifier Kenny de Schepper next.
