China's annual capacity addition grew by 24 percent in 2013, while cumulative capacity grew by 21 percent. Worldwide the total wind energy capacity increased by 35.5 GW. China's total additional wind capacity in 2013 was larger than that of all the countries in Europe combined.

As in previous years, windy Inner Mongolia was the leading province in terms of cumulative installed capacity. Inner Mongolia had 20.2 GW of installed wind capacity in 2013, or more than 22 percent of China's total installed capacity.

Inner Mongolia, however, fell behind Xinjiang in additional capacity in 2013. Xinjiang added 3.1 GW. Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shanxi and Shandong collectively added 46 percent of China's total additional capacity.

Sinovel Wind Group Company, China's largest wind turbine maker, and Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd are China's leading makers of offshore wind energy turbines with a market share of 39.7 percent and 25.5 percent, respectively.

Almost 19.0 GW or 21 percent of China's wind energy capacity comes from wind turbines made by Goldwind. Another 15.0 GW or 16.5 percent was supplied by Sinovel Wind.

Among global brands, Danish firm, Vestas Wind Systems A/S, had the highest installed capacity share of 4.9 percent or 4.5 GW. The Spanish firm, Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica, was second with four percent or 3.5GW, while the American conglomerate, GE, was in third with two percent or 1.8 GW.

Offshore wind saw a large drop in 2013 with only 39 MW in added capacity last year. This increased the cumulative installed capacity to 428 MW. There were only three Chinese companies that installed new offshore projects last year.
