Researchers at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia said that eating huge amounts of fruits and vegetables will not only make one healthier but can actually make people happier.

The study, which involved more than 12,000 people, concluded that eating at least eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day improves mental well-being and makes someone feel positive and happy.

The UQ study dwells into the research on the effects of fruit and vegetable consumption on mental health as most previous studies focused on the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables on physical health.

The study showed that the more people eat fruits and vegetables, the more happy they become, said UQ health economics researcher Dr. Redzo Mujcic.

"It comes up the more you eat the better, but there is also some optimal points. Eating about five fruits and five vegetables [per day] makes us the happiest we can be in that case," he told Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio.

Mujcic's study looked at people's choices on fruit and vegetables, and rated these against their levels of satisfaction, stress and vitality.
