A new fire-safety technology called Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight can prevent your house from burning down when you're away.
Leeo's Chief Executive Adam Gettings initially got the idea and inspiration for the plug-in device when his friend's home burnt down without his friend realizing it.

"A friend of mine was out one day, and while he was away, there was a house fire. It deeply disturbed me that our homes have no way of telling us what's going on when we're away," Gettings said.
The Leeo product is the first in what could be a broad range of smart home gadgets, Gettings added.
With the Smart Alert Nightlight, consumers will be notified when something goes wrong in their house when they're not around. Consumers can connect the new smart home device to their household smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
To use the Smart Alert, simply plug it into a wall socket, preferably near to the smoke or carbon-monoxide detector, connect it to the home's wireless network and set it up through the Leeo app in any iOS and Android devices.
In case of emergency or when the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms go off, the Leeo service will send an alert via the app to the user's phone.
If there is no response from the user, the nightlight will automatically reach the emergency contact list the user listed in the device.
According to Robert Brunner, Leeo's designer, the company "designed a refreshingly simple way to deliver a smart, connected product that has real value."
"Leeo's design philosophy is a promise to build 'beautiful products that perform valuable functions intuitively' that don't require change or create new infrastructure in your home," Brunner added.
This Smart Alert Nightlight is now available for US$99.
