Second seeded Rafael Nadal stormed into the quarterfinals after crushing Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets while fifth seeded Ernests Gulbis was upset by Croatian wild card entry Brona Coric at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Wednesday.
World No. 3 Nadal was on fire in the first set as he jumped to an early lead, breaking the French qualifier three times and served out for the set.

Herbert tried to stage a comeback at the second set as he forced the Spaniard to face two service break points but Nadal answered back to save the breaks and added more damage as he broke the Frenchman twice to win the set and the match 6-1 6-1 in 57 minutes.
Herbert also committed 11 double faults and 30 unforced errors that contributed to his demise.
"He tried to play very aggressively, but mistakes crept in," said Nadal. "He started to have more mistakes than usual on his serve."
The nine-time French Open champion will face the winner Andrey Golubev and Borna Coric clash.
The 17-year-old Croatian qualifier is competing in only his 12th tour-level event and has recorded the biggest win of his career as he defeated World No. 13 Ernests Gulbis.
Coric went head-to-head with Gulbis in the first set that went into a tie-break with the teenager edging the Latvian 7-2.
In the second set, Coric continued his momentum and broke Gulbis twice to take the set and the match 7(7)-6(2) 6-3 that lasted an hour and 35 minutes.
In an earlier match, Seventh seeded David Goffin of Belgium became the first player to enter the quarters as he defeated Croatian Ivan Dodig in straight sets 7(7)-6(0) 6-4.
Dodig now awaits the winner of the matchup between fourth seeded Milos Raonic and American Donald Young which will take place on Thursday.
Roanic needs to perform well in the tournament in order to get a shot at the year-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London slated to start on Sunday Nov. 9.
